Yoga and the Myth of Flexibility

I am a self-professed control freak who found yoga, meditation, and NLP to manage self-induced stress. I obsess over anatomy books, full moons, and the mysteries of being human. I have been practicing various styles of yoga and meditation for over twenty years. I am a master NLP Practitioner, I am registered with the Yoga Alliance as an RYT-500 yoga teacher. I am also a certified meditation instructor and Ayurvedic practitioner.

Let’s talk about Yoga and the myth of flexibility.

Do you need to be flexible to do Yoga?
Based on almost all Yoga social media pictures, the answer would appear to be ‘Yes”.
Only a tiny percentage of the human population, roughly 10 to 20%, has the flexibility to achieve many of the poses. And they are doing that at the expense of their joints. Too much mobility in the joints can lead to bone-on-bone compression and eventually wearing away of the protective joint cartilage.

Yoga is accessible to the average body or anybody with a breath. Your shape might not resemble the Instagram-perfect pose, but that isn’t even the purpose. It doesn’t matter if you ever get there. It’s about the breath. It’s about exploration. It’s about the movement itself.

Do you feel like the tin man in the back of a class full of bendy, twisty beings from another planet? Don’t be intimidated. You have an average human body like the other 80% of humans. Find a class or teacher that understands and allows you to explore your unique practice.

Don’t feel pressured to achieve. Breathe and enjoy!
