“What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.”
– Abraham Maslow
Your unique experiences shape your beliefs and views of the world. The actions you take are because of your beliefs.
These beliefs and perceptions are often fundamental to your ideas about yourself, where you came from, what you stand for, and who you are. These views may define “you” as you look through your lens at the world.
The reality is your beliefs; these seemingly fundamental perceptions are only that, one narrow viewpoint. They don’t actually define you. You choose to carry that definition. Maybe it feels good and makes you feel safe. Perhaps it’s convenient and helps you fit in.
If you don’t like your actions and don’t feel you are headed in the right direction, you may need to change your perceptions and beliefs.
Changing your preconceived ideas about the world is hard work. These perceptions define your ego. Asking someone to change is asking them to redefine, to reimagine themselves. The ego fears change; the ego does not like to be wrong.
Change can happen, but only if each individual is willing to take a long hard look at their beliefs and actions. None of us has complete knowledge. We only know what we can perceive. When faced with inconvenient truths, we can react in fear, anger, and rage. Or we could take a step back and examine our beliefs to see if our perception needs to be realigned.
If you want change, you need to start within. To become aware of yourself.
May we all continue to seek change, truth, and wisdom. May we support each other on the path toward creating positive change.
